St Denys
St Denys' - the church in Chilworth
St Denys' church stands on the site of a probably Saxon - Norman church which dates to the 12th century. The present church was completed in 1820 and only faint traces of the previous construction remain. The village of Chilworth has grown South and east from the church, so that it retains the feel of a country church despite being next the modern village and the University of Southampton Science Park. It is a Small Pilgrim Place and services on 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month are from the Book of Common Prayer from 1662.
Today, the church is open for pilgrims and visitors alike 10am - 4pm every day (note: there is a service at 9:30 on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Sundays of the month) . If you are intending to travel a long distance we welcome advance contact from visitors.
Accessibility and Facilities
Parking: parking is available in Fowlers Walk (left turn after church) and there is also a small car park between the Old Village Road and the church hedge. There are no marked accessibility spaces and there is no way into the church grounds for vehicles. The paths from both parking areas to the church are tarmac.
Toilets: there are toilet facilities in the adjacent Community Centre which has a wheelchair ramp although the toilet is not wheelchair accessible.
Floor levels: there is a small step at the entrance to the church the rest of which is mainly on one level.
Seating: St Denys' church has pews.
Services: We use service sheets and hymn books. Music is generally from a CD. Although there is a sound system with integrated T loop, St Denys is a small space so this is not often used.
